Since the spring, Porchetta & Co (825 Dundas Street West, Toronto) has declared a soft-shell Saturday every few weeks or so. On-offer: a delicious sandwich of panko-crusted and fried soft-shell crab. Pictured above with with Ontario asparagus, smoked bacon, and wild leek aioli. Though the toppings change, the core of crunchy fried panko and sweet crab meat is hard to resist. And you can get your fix soon, as another soft-shell Saturday takes place tomorrow, Saturday, July 30th. I hear from Porchetta & Co’s twitter stream that tomorrow’s softie includes crisp Nostrano ham, watercress, fava beans, and smoked aioli. Grab a Limonata and sit in the nearby park for a great start to the long-weekend.

Tonya > I wouldn’t trek across the city for this alone, but it’s definitely a nice treat if you can hop on over.
Ting > make sure it’s a soft-shell Saturday and it can be IN YOU!

I tried this the last time they were offering it. Maybe I got a bad crab, or maybe I was just too disgruntled over the speeding ticket I got on the way over, but the crab itself was pretty bad. It had almost no discernible flavour, and an odd texture that alternated between weirdly mealy and off-puttingly crunchy.

Hmn.. the last two sammies (the Po’ Boy) I had were really good. Sadly, there are no more attempts this season to be made, as yesterday was their last Soft-Shell Saturday of the season. Until next year!
